This race never dips below the starting elevation of 9700’ and climbs to almost 11,000’ three times during the 90 mile out and back race. With sweeping views at every moment during the race and an average altitude of 10,443’ you are going to need every breath you can get.
PACKET PICKUP:
With a race start time of 7 a.m. at a remote location, we will not have time for day of packet pickup or registration. Packet pickup will be the day before from Noon-8pm at the outdoor pavilion at the address 50 East 100 North Ephraim, UT 84627 and watch for the signs to turn into the parking lot.
CONDITIONS:
The road is all dirt with some stretches of maintained dirt and gravel. The road can be extremely fast in some sections and painfully slow in others, especially if it has been really rainy. The mud can make the area extremely difficult in a matter of hours. There are some ruts and sections of exposed rock. Beware loose dirt and stretches of tire-popping gravel on hard-pack!
This race takes place on a road in the sky. The weather at this elevation can vary dramatically and extremely quickly. There are long stretches of very exposed riding and while we will do our best to prepare the race for the weather, we encourage only the hardiest of individuals to attempt the race.
Temperature information: People don’t realize how cold it can be on Skyline Drive, even when it’s hot in the valley. Here is a local temperature guide from one of our sponsors. Expected temperature: 44-67 Wind: 7-22 MPH
AID STATIONS:
We encourage you to be as self-sufficient as you can. We have 2 aid stations, for a total of 3 aid stops in the race. The first aid station is set up at Mile 31, the top of Ephraim Canyon Road. The second aid station is at the turnaround at mile 45 at a place called High Top. It is the highest point on the Skyline Drive and of the race. The Aid stations have a portable bathroom, and provide a random assortment of food, snacks, water and Hammer Nutrition HEED. The Ephraim Canyon Aid station will also have drop bags if you’d like us to bring there for you.
CREWING:
Crews and crew vehicles are not allowed on any stretch of the course at any time.
Crews can meet a rider by dropping down the Fairview Canyon highway, going south to the town of Ephraim and winding up the 14 mile dirt road to Skyline drive. The aid station will be there and crews can cheer on a rider at that point. Local traffic will continue to flow on race day and any extra vehicles pose further danger to our racers. While the road is not singletrack, at many points it is only wide enough for one vehicle. Pay attention to other users.
DROPPING OUT:
While we like to think that most will be able to finish this race, we must say that it is not realistic for everyone who will sign up. Fortunately we have paired up with the Sanpete County Search and Rescue who will be patrolling Skyline Drive and you should flag them down if you need assistance, medical or otherwise. They can help you get back to the Start/Finish. Please do not just ride down one of the many canyons. We’d hate for you to be lost!
